As you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid again and again when I was in need. Not that I am looking for a gift, but I am looking for what may be credited to your account. I have received full payment and even more; I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epahroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God. And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. Phil. 4: 15-19 NIV
In this scripture, a precious principle is taught: When we give to the Lord's work, we make an investment for which there are abundant returns. These returns are certainly material, but they are also spiritual. Material returns are good, but spiritual returns are most precious.
In the last few years, I've become aware of my great need to draw near to God. Drawing near to Him, however, is a huge difficulty for me. In the first place, my personal life is very satisfying. I can't say that I lack anything material, plus I belong to the best church fellowship I've ever experienced, am able to do many worthwhile skills, have family and friends that I love very much. Truthfully, there was nothing driving me to God except a dawning understanding that drawing near to Him is paramount, no matter how good one might have it. Nevertheless, the good life brings complacency, and made me too lazy to bother. Even so, the magnitude of the need hung over me as a nagging conviction.
Out of desperation to overcome my spiritual lethargy, having understood the above scripture, I began to give quite generously out of my personal business earnings, beyond the tithe. I told the Lord I recognized my need to change, that I was unable to accomplish on my own, so I was giving to His work, that He would bring about the needed change in my heart.
I did indeed begin to change. The Lord showed me a method of prayer that works for me, and also opened up to my understanding spiritual truths, and much more ability to see what He is accomplishing, and about to accomplish, on the earth today. This is BIG!
The Lord is most generous. He didn't limit the returns to spiritual things, though I would have been more than content with the good spiritual things. He also poured into my business a significant increase in sales, even though I've been cutting back on my products in order to have more time to devote to the Lord's work. It's amazing!
Please consider giving to our Africa is Calling mission. Africa isn't just calling; Africa is screaming for help. God has given us connections to make it possible to personally do His work among the people of Africa, at present most specifically in the countries of Malawi, Rwanda, and Zambia. We will fund projects that meet both their spiritual and physical needs, as God says both are necessary.
What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? James 2:14-16 NIV
